The ctenophora are a large group of comb jellies that travel by drifting in ocean currents.
In making this piece, I wanted to
call attention to the phenomenon of our waste plastic accumulating in the
oceans, and the potential of its destructive power to harm not just marine
life, but all life forms — including us. It seemed appropriate to create
an object representing a beautiful and fragile life form in immediate danger,
and to make it from the very plastic materials that are among its greatest
threats. Its form is graceful, light-catching. At the same time,
the materials of its construction are potentially toxic the the creature
represented — and , by extension, to us.
Materials
Clear packing tape, nylon monofilament, glass seed beads.
Measurements
Vessel is 9" high, approximately 9" wide. The monofilament poof extends to 13" wide.
